13: Geological Clues and Coastal Changes: Unravelling the Secrets of Blackhall’s Artificial Beach

As we walk towards Castle Eden Dene, the beach platform’s profile changes. The front edge forms a pronounced step, around a meter high. Unlike Blast Beach, some of the rock waste here was reworked and sorted by the sea. The yellow and red areas indicate it is Carboniferous rock waste, not local material. The colours can tell us it’s a Carboniferous source, mined from beneath the sea.
