Let’s closely observe the millimeter-scale laminations of the crinkly beds. These distinctive layers are formed by photosynthetic cyanobacteria binding inorganic materials like carbonate and sand. As the microbial mats reach for the sun, these layers build up in shallow water.
The crinkly structure raises intriguing questions about its origin. One possibility is that they are ripples formed by currents along the sea or lagoon bed. Another idea is that the crinkles result from the deformation of individual lamina after the mats have formed.
These impressive crinkly beds are visible along the cliff section. Take a careful look, and you’ll notice the zigzag patterns extending for several meters. Some sections even reveal larger dome-like structures, possibly small stromatolites in development.
