At Ryhope’s scenic coastline, we can see remarkable evidence of past glacial activity. The upper cliffs showcase a transition from glacial till to outwash sands and gravels. Distinctive dipping foreset beds, provide clues to an ice marginal lake and delta environment formed during the last Ice Age.
As the retreating ice created lakes, sediments were deposited by meltwater streams into the lake (possibly Glacial Lake Wear) to build a delta. Radiometric dating places this event at around 19,500 years ago, shedding light on the region’s deglaciation history.
