At Blast Beach, an artificial, human-made platform stands out. Unlike a natural rocky coast, this platform at the back of the beach is unique. Normally, a rocky coast has cliffs facing the sea, but here the natural cliff is protected by man-made rock waste from mining. This platform slows erosion. Surprisingly, at the back of this platform you can spot terrestrial plant species growing in this marine setting. This is unusual because a rocky place like this wouldn’t normally have plants like reed beds, hawthorn, and birch growing on the beach. This has happened because the platform has elevated the land, keeping marine influence at bay and creating a habitat for these plants.
